James Kirkland is Likely To Make Ring Return in October

Junior middleweight contender James Kirkland (31-1, 27KOs) will likely return to the ring in the month of October, according to the boxer's legal adviser and co-manager Michael Miller.

Following his March ten round disqualification win over Carlos Molina, Kirkland underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair two tears in his right shoulder.

Miller told BoxingScene.com that Kirkland's rehabilitation is being carefully paced to ensure a 100% recovery.

Kirkland was offered the opportunity to fight WBC champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on September 15th at the MGM Grand, but his handlers wanted to avoid the scenario of a rushed rehabilitation and the possibility of reinjuring the shoulder.

Based on the outline of his rehab schedule, Kirkland should be fully capable to begin sparring in the month of August.

Donaire, Rios Doubleheader in Play For The Summer

Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum has advised BoxingScene.com that his company is currently working on a doubleheader that features two of his top stars - WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (28-1, 18KOs) and former WBA lightweight king Brandon Rios (30-0-1, 22Kos).

The doubleheader, according to Arum, will take place at the end of June or early July. The opponents have yet to be finalized.

A date of July 7th, at the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles, had previously been mentioned for Donaire. If that becomes the actual date, the card will likely go to Showtime, since HBO is televising the return of Amir Khan. However, Khan's card is also being positioned for the Honda Center in Anaheim, which probably rules out a Los Angeles venue for Donaire/Rios, at least for that date. Everything should become a lot clearer in the next week or so.

After a deserved resting period in his native Argentina, WBA super lightweight champion Marcos Maidana travelled to Oxnard last Monday to join his new trainer Robert Garcia. “El Chino” had a great welcome by his gym-mates including Brandon Rios.

“I’ve felt very good in my first week training with my new team. There are great fighters and great atmosphere around here. Obviously it will take me some time to adjust and get a great physical condition but we’ll get there with hard work,” Maidana said.

Just when Maidana was finishing his firt week of work he was surprised by the news of a possible rematch with Victor Ortiz next June 23 after Andre Berto failed a doping test.

“The news caught me by surprise of course. My advisor, Sebastian Contursi, let me know that Golden Boy Promotions asked him whether it was possible for me to be ready for June 23 but of course I cannot do it in only five weeks. It’s a shame that the time framework does not fit as I would’ve love to face Ortiz again,” Maidana commented.

“I know this is the second postponement for Victor and I feel bad for him. Maybe if Golden Boy Promotions can secure a new date then we could talk about the rematch because I know people want it.”, “El Chino “added.

Maidana also referred to Amir Khan’s situation as the British is also looking for an opponent.

“That’s another rematch that I’d love to take. Everybody knows that I’ve been asking to face Amir again for more than a year now. But again time-wise it does not work as apparently Khan needs to fight on July 7. In any case, if either Ortiz or Khan are willing to fight me I’ll be ready for any of them by the end of July,” Maidana explained.

“I know Amir Khan is looking for his former belts to be given back to him after the Peterson case. Andre Berto Fails VADA Test, Positive For Nandrolone

BoxingScene.com has been advised that Andre Berto has failed one of his random drug tests that were issued by VADA [Voluntary Anti Drug Association]. Berto's A and B samples were confirmed to have had traces of nandrolone. Historically, 80% of anabolic steroid positives from 1998-2003 were for nandrolone as a result of a contaminated supplement not injection.

Berto is preparing for a welterweight rematch with Victor Ortiz on June 23rd at Staples Center in Los Angeles California. Both fighters had agreed to take part in a random drug testing protocol. There is no word on the status of Berto being able to obtain a license under the California State Athletic Commission.

Kendall Holt Withdraws From Josesito Lopez Clash

Kendall Holt has withdrawn from his scheduled June 22 fight against Josesito Lopez.

Holt, a former WBO junior welterweight champion, told BoxingScene.com that he pulled out of the 12-round bout because he is concerned about boxing outside during the summer in Southern California. Holt had agreed to fight Lopez in an ESPN2 main event, but changed his mind when he learned Dan Goossen, Lopez’s promoter, had secured Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, Calif. as the site for the fight.

“I have no problem at all fighting Lopez,” Holt, 30, said. “But I’m not going to sugarcoat it. I don’t feel comfortable fighting outside. I don’t think it’s a good idea because it’s going to be hot and then you’ve got all the heat from the TV lights. That could a factor and that’s not a chance I should take.”

Soboba Casino holds its fights under a large tent, thus fighters aren’t directly exposed to the sun. The Holt-Lopez fight would’ve started at about 7 p.m. PDT, when the sun is still shining, yet weaker than earlier in the day.

According to weatherreports.com, the average high temperature in San Jacinto in June is 91 degrees. The average low temperature is 51 degrees.

Lopez is from nearby Riverside, Calif., but Holt said that wasn’t an issue because his attorney, Patrick English, had received an assurance from the IBF that California-based judges would not be assigned to what was to be an elimination fight for the No. 2 spot in the IBF’s 140-pound rankings.

Goossen is expected to keep Lopez in the main event and find a replacement for Holt (28-5, 16 KOs), a Paterson, N.J., native who’s coming off a second-round technical knockout victory over Baltimore’s Tim Coleman (19-3-1, 5 KOs). Holt dropped Coleman four times in that fight, which also was televised as an ESPN2 “Friday Night Fights” main event March 16 from Cabazon, Calif.

Dominating Coleman helped Holt overcome a 12-round split decision defeat to since-crowned WBC 140-pound champion Danny Garcia (23-0, 14 KOs) in his previous fight, a WBC elimination match Oct. 15 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Lopez, 27, lost his last fight, but he gave highly touted prospect Jessie Vargas (19-0, 9 KOs) the toughest fight of his career. Lopez lost a split decision in their 10-rounder Sept. 17 in Las Vegas.

Two-time world champion Juan Manuel Lopez (31-2, 28KOs), who is serving a 10-month suspension for his remarks against the referee Roberto Ramirez after suffering a technical knockout loss, for the second, to WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido of Mexico, will undergo another series of medical examinations following his own admission that he suffered spells where he "blacked out" during three of his fights, including both of the bouts with Salido.

The need for additional tests were announced by the president of the Professional Boxing Commission, Dommys Delgado, who said there was a medical recommendation to turn up the statutory medical suspension from two to six months.

Alfredo Angulo's Incarceration Confirmed, Court in June

Although the rumors have been lingering for months, junior middleweight Alfredo Angulo finally confirmed his incarceration to ESPN's radio program "A Los Golpes." The boxer is being held at an immigration detention center in California. He surrendered himself through an agreement between his lawyers and the immigration authorities.

According to Angulo, he was set to appear for a court hearing in April to resolve the immigration issues, but for unknown reasons the court date was postponed until June. Angulo has been detained at the center for at least four months.

Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya came to visit him a few weeks ago to show his support. Angulo has been inactive since last November's six round TKO loss to James Kirkland. The change, approved by owners on Thursday, was made to accommodate baseball's new one-game, wild-card playoff round. The new round of playoffs was added after schedules were set with the regular season ending Oct. 3 and the World Series starting Oct. 24.

Teams with home-field advantage will host Games 3, 4 and 5, eliminating one travel day, and the wild-card playoff winners will start the division series at home. The division series matching the Nos. 2 and 3 seed will begin Saturday, Oct. 6, while the matchup involving the No. 1 seed and the wild-card winner is scheduled to start Sunday, Oct. 7, according to a source.

Baseball could revert back to a 2-2-1 format in 2013, when the regular season is tentatively set to start on April 1, with a Sunday night game possible the previous day. Baseball is shifting from the midweek start it used in 2011 and 2012.

The 2-2-1 format has been used in the divisional round since 1998.

Baseball also announced its new one-game, wild-card playoffs will be televised Oct. 5 by TBS and that two division series games will shift from TBS to the MLB Network under a deal running through 2013. TBS Sports president David Levy said a rights fee was involved.

The two division series games will be available in more than 30 million fewer homes on MLB Network than on TBS -- that includes some hometown fans of the teams playing.
